Runa Khan, whose Bangladeshi NGO Friendship runs seven hospital ships, was named a 2026 Ramon Magsaysay awardee in Manila on 31 August 2026.

What the Runa Khan Magsaysay Award citation counts
The Foundation calls Runa Khan “a humanitarian innovator bringing opportunity and dignity to Bangladesh’s remote communities”. That is the full published citation line.
The awardee record for Runa Khan lists seven hospital ships and two land-based hospitals. It adds 550 mobile clinics and 700 trained community medic aides.
Friendship started in 2002 with 28 people and one floating hospital. Runa Khan is its founder and executive director. The organisation now reports more than 7,500 employees.
The record also credits 137 economic development hubs with 205,000 jobs. Friendship’s own leadership page puts the reach of the work at over 7.5 million people.
Schooling is counted separately. Prefabricated schools reached 30,000 students, and their Secondary School Certificate average was 90.05%. Eight books carry Runa Khan’s name, six of them on teaching.
Assam’s boat clinics are the Indian comparison
Assam’s boat clinics are the nearest Indian comparison, and they are government run. They began in 2008 and cover about 30 lakh people on the Brahmaputra. The state mission recorded 196,882 general health check-ups in 2024-25.
The Foundation’s awardee database lists Runa Khan among three people elected for 2026. The ceremony is set for the Metropolitan Theater in Manila on 15 November 2026.
“It is with great happiness and profound humility that I accept the Ramon Magsaysay Award,” Runa Khan said on 31 August 2026. “There is no leader who walks alone.”
