Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma took over as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at Air Headquarters on September 1, 2026.
The Ministry of Defence announced the Shakti Sharma IAF appointment at 6:01 pm the same day. Peoples Feed has read release 2305594.
Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma is one officer inside a far larger group. A Ministry of Defence note dated March 8, 2026 puts the number of women officers in the armed forces at around 11,000.
Release 2305594 calls her “the first woman officer (non-medical) in the Indian Defence Forces to attain the rank of Air Vice Marshal (or equivalent)”. The bracket carries the weight.
Medical branch officers got there first. The Ministry of Defence Year End Review 2025 records women officers heading the top four posts of the Armed Forces Medical Services.
The Shakti Sharma IAF Record Runs to 32 Years
The Indian Air Force commissioned Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma into its Education Branch on June 18, 1994. Two-star rank came 32 years later.
Command of a Sainik School came earlier. The post at Sainik School, Kapurthala, in Punjab went to Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma. No woman officer from the three services had held it before.
The release names two university links. Indian Air Force Chairs of Excellence at IIT Kanpur and at Pune University were set up by Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma.
Business Standard reported one more first on September 2, 2026. It says she was the first woman Group Captain in the Indian Air Force outside the medical branch.
Release 2305594 does not carry that earlier detail. The claim of a first is the Ministry of Defence’s own. Peoples Feed has found no independent register of two-star appointments by gender.
One Two-Star Officer Among About 11,000 Women Officers
The base of the pyramid is moving faster than its top. The Ministry of Defence Year End Review 2025 counts 119 women officers commanding Army units.
The Officers Training Academy holds 120 places a year for women officer cadets. In 2024 the Army raised its yearly intake from 80 vacancies to 144, a rise of 80%.
By early 2026, 158 women cadets had joined the National Defence Academy. Seventeen graduated in May 2025 and 15 more in November 2025.
The Sainik School posting of Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma links to one more number. All 33 Sainik Schools have reserved 10% of seats for girls since the 2021-22 academic year.
What this means for you: If you have a daughter sitting the Sainik School test or the NDA exam, one woman now holds two-star rank outside the medical branches. Check the 10% quota for girls at all 33 Sainik Schools before the next admission cycle.
