The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has extended Dr T V Somanathan’s term as Cabinet Secretary by one year, to August 30, 2027.
The Cabinet Secretary extension begins on August 30, 2026, the day the first term was to end. The Cabinet Secretariat’s own list of office holders shows Dr Somanathan took charge on August 30, 2024.
Peoples Feed counted that list on September 10, 2026. It runs to 33 tenures since February 6, 1950, held by 32 people, because Vishnu Sahay held the post twice. Rajiv Gauba, the previous holder, served five years.
Akashvani News reported the decision on August 6, 2026. Business Standard and The Secretariat reported it on August 5, 2026. Both describe Dr Somanathan as a 1987-batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre.
What the Cabinet Secretary Extension Changes
The Cabinet Secretary extension keeps one officer at the head of the Union government’s civil service for another 12 months. The Cabinet Secretariat says the Cabinet Secretary is also ex-officio Chairman of the Civil Services Board.
That board sits on postings and central deputation for All India Services officers. The chair of those meetings is now fixed until August 30, 2027.
The same order covered the Union Home Secretary. Govind Mohan, a 1989-batch officer of the Sikkim cadre, was given a year beyond August 22, 2026, according to Business Standard.
The service Dr Somanathan heads is short of people. The Press Information Bureau published the IAS e-Civil List on June 22, 2026. It shows 5,755 officers in position against an authorised strength of 7,026 on January 1, 2026.
That is 1,271 vacancies. Dr Somanathan chairs the board that moves senior officers into and out of the shortfall.
Two-Year Terms Are Now the Exception
Long terms are the pattern, not the break from it. Peoples Feed measured the five tenures before Dr Somanathan’s from the Cabinet Secretariat’s published dates.
B K Chaturvedi served three years, from June 14, 2004 to June 13, 2007. K M Chandrasekhar and Ajit Kumar Seth served four years each. Pradeep Kumar Sinha served four years and two months.
Rajiv Gauba served five years, from August 30, 2019 to August 30, 2024. That is the longest tenure on the Cabinet Secretariat’s list. Every one of the last five holders passed three years.
Dr Somanathan’s extension takes him to three years. On the same list, that is short.
The Press Information Bureau records that Dr Somanathan gave the welcome address at the 18th Civil Services Day. That was at Vigyan Bhawan on April 21, 2026. Vice President C P Radhakrishnan delivered the keynote.
