An honest description of the job
Peoples Feed is a small newsroom. It launched on 11 September 2026, it is owned by a sole proprietorship, and it is funded by its owner rather than by an established revenue base. Everybody here does more than one job. If you join, you will report, you will verify your own work, you will chase an officer’s press cell for a right of reply, you will find the licence for your own photograph and you will write your own metadata.
In exchange, the work is unusually specific. We report on named people who changed what happens to other people, from primary documents. Nobody hands you a press release and asks you to turn it round in twenty minutes. You will spend your day reading gazette notifications, annual reports, award citations and RTI replies, and finding the human being inside them. Many journalists find that far more satisfying than the alternative. Some find it tedious. It is worth knowing which you are before you apply.
Applications go to connect@peoplesfeed.in with the role in the subject line.
Where we are, and how we work
- Base: Greater Noida, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. Most roles can be done remotely from anywhere in India, and for district reporting we would rather you were in the district than in Delhi.
- Team: seven named people at launch. Everybody’s name and role is published on our About Us page, and every article carries a real byline.
- Hours: a publishing schedule, not a rolling breaking-news desk. We are not competing to be first. We are competing to be right and to be the only outlet that wrote it down properly.
- Standards: every rule we work to is published, at Editorial Policy and Fact-Checking Policy. Read them before you apply. They are the job description.
Roles we hire for
We hire when there is work and budget for it, which for a newsroom of this size means a small number of openings a year. We keep applications on file for 12 months and we do come back to them.
Correspondent, by beat
Reporting one or two of our ten beats: Governance and Policy, Civil Services, Diplomacy, Health and Medicine, Education and Campus, Science and Innovation, Defence and Forces, Social Impact, Business and Industry, Honours and Recognition.
What you would do: find named people whose decisions changed something, obtain the documents, verify the figures, seek the right of reply, and file briefs, stories and profiles to our four shapes.
What we look for: the ability to read an order and know what it actually does. A working knowledge of how at least one Indian institutional system operates from the inside. Plain writing. Willingness to leave a fact out rather than guess it.
Senior Correspondent, profiles
The profile is our house shape and the hardest thing we publish: 1,200 to 1,800 words, at least six sources, three of them primary, at least one independent of the subject.
What we look for: three or four published pieces that show you can build a portrait of a person from documents rather than from an interview, and that you can write about somebody fairly when what you found is not entirely flattering.
Copy editor and fact-checker
What you would do: run the name and designation check, the living-person audit and the source and link check on every piece before it publishes, and hold anything that fails. Enforce the banned-word lists and the house style. Write and check headlines and metadata.
What we look for: obsessive accuracy, a memory for how Indian designations and institutional names are correctly written, and the confidence to tell a senior colleague their piece is not going out today.
Data reporter
What you would do: build defensible numbers from NFHS, UDISE+, AISHE, NCRB, Census, data.gov.in, CAG reports and RTI replies, and turn them into charts and tables a general reader can read on a phone.
What we look for: spreadsheet fluency at minimum, and ideally Python or R. The judgement to pick the honest comparison rather than the flattering one.
Photo and visuals editor
What you would do: source images with evidenced licences, commission photography where budget allows, manage the licence records, write alt text, and make sure every image meets our platform requirements.
What we look for: real fluency in Creative Commons, Government Open Data Licence India and image rights generally. We do not publish an image whose licence we cannot evidence, so this role is a gatekeeper.
Audience and newsletter editor
What you would do: run the newsletter, the search and discovery side, and the social channels, without ever writing a headline that overstates what an article says.
What we look for: somebody who understands that a clickbait headline on an accurate article is still a false statement.
District stringers and freelance contributors
Our most frequent opening. Paid per commissioned piece, on terms agreed in writing in advance. Most of the work that changes people’s lives happens in districts, and almost nobody is reporting it. If you are in one, we want to know you. Details, including our honest position on pay, are on the Write For Us page.
Internships
We offer a small number of paid internships of three to six months, in reporting or in fact-checking. Interns are paid a stipend, are given real work, and get bylines on what they write. We do not run unpaid internships and we do not ask interns to work on trial without pay.
What we can honestly offer
- Pay: agreed in writing before you start, and paid on time. We are not able to match the salaries of established national publications and we will not pretend we can. We will tell you a number early in the conversation rather than waste your time.
- A byline on everything you write, an author page, and your name on your work permanently, including when we correct it.
- Published standards you can point at. If somebody asks you to do something that breaches them, the rule is on a public page, and you can refuse on that basis.
- Editorial independence in practice. Nobody will ask you to write about an advertiser. Commercial conversations do not reach reporters. See Ownership and Funding.
- Flexible and mostly remote work, and a publishing rhythm rather than a permanent scramble.
- Real training on the craft we are specific about: reading orders, using RTI, verifying designations, handling a right of reply, and writing about a living person without exposing the publication or yourself.
What we cannot offer
- The pay, the pension or the job security of a large newsroom.
- A large desk of colleagues to hand work to. You will finish your own pieces.
- An expenses account. Travel is discussed and approved case by case.
- A promise that we will be here in five years. We are a young publication funded by its owner. We would rather say that than not.
What will end an application, or a job
- Fabricating a quote, a source or a document.
- Filing AI-generated copy as your own reporting.
- Plagiarism of any amount.
- Accepting money, a gift, travel or hospitality from a person or institution you cover.
- An undisclosed conflict of interest.
- Publishing a claim about a named person without the right of reply our policy requires.
How to apply
Email connect@peoplesfeed.in with the role name in the subject line and send:
- A CV, in PDF, no more than two pages.
- Three published pieces, as links, or three writing samples if you are unpublished. Tell us in one line each why you chose them.
- A short note, no more than 300 words, on one named person you think Peoples Feed should have written about and has not, with the three primary documents you would build the piece from. This is the part we read most carefully. It tells us more than the CV does.
- Where you are based, and which of our ten beats you know best.
- Any conflicts of interest we should know about.
Please do not send a cover letter about your passion for journalism. Send the story idea instead.
Our process, and how long it takes
| Stage | Timeline |
|---|---|
| We acknowledge your application | Within 5 working days |
| First conversation, if we are taking it forward | Within 3 weeks |
| A paid test assignment, if relevant to the role | Agreed and paid before you start it |
| Decision | Within 2 weeks of the test or the final conversation |
We pay for test assignments. If we ask you to produce work as part of a hiring process, there is a fee, agreed first. If you do not hear from us within 5 working days, write again. Small newsrooms lose emails.
Equal opportunity
We hire on the ability to do the work. We do not discriminate on the basis of religion, caste, race, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, marital status, place of birth, language or age. If you need an adjustment at any stage of the process, tell us and we will make it. We would particularly like to hear from reporters outside the metros, because that is where our stories are and where our coverage is thinnest.
Your data
Applications and CVs are held for 12 months from the decision and then deleted, unless you ask us to delete them sooner. Write to grievance@peoplesfeed.in to ask what we hold, to correct it or to have it erased. See our Privacy Policy.
No openings right now?
Send the application anyway. We keep them for 12 months and we look at that file first when something opens. In the meantime, the fastest way into Peoples Feed is to pitch a story: see Write For Us.
